Welcome to an evening of music celebrating the work of one of our country’s great composers. The music of Duke Ellington is not only distinctly American in tone and style, but is also - as evidenced tonight - of perhaps unexpected spiritual depth. This is especially true in the major work presented tonight: his set of three Sacred Concerts. Today, we associate Ellington with his myriad three minute tunes - the immortal short songs of the early and middle part of his career, such as “Satin Doll” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” But near the end of his life, dying of cancer, Ellington turned his attention to music of a more profound and spiritual bent, producing three evening length concerts of sacred music. Here, in these magnificent jazz oratorios, a perfect fusion of jazz and classical styles, the composer makes plain his religious fervor and joy.
Selected movements from these three concerts were later arranged into a suite called “The Best of The Sacred Concerts” by the American conductor Marin Alsop in the 1990’s; it is largely music from that suite that we perform this evening. In addition, we are delighted to welcome the vocal jazz choirs from Clackamas Community College, who will perform several other selections from the Sacred Concerts in some terrific arrangements by Phil Mattson.
We hope you enjoy these rarely performed masterpieces of American music. I am beyond grateful to my colleagues Tom Sandahl and Kathleen Hollingsworth for taking this somewhat intimidating journey with me, to Dr. Jan Dabrowski and President Melody Rose for supporting our efforts, financially and otherwise, and to my music therapy and voice col- leagues Dr. Laura Beer, Maya Story, Julia McBride, John Haek, Pollyanna Hancock-Moody, Jill Soltero and Jim Schmitt. We are also pleased to welcome the newly founded, entirely student-run Marylhurst Jazz Choir who, in only their second term of existence, are already making some beautiful sounds!
